My Truth Your Truth

👉 This is part of Truth Hunters

In our individual-oriented society, self-actualisation is the mission. With rights, resources and Western values on our side, we’re all protagonists pursuing our own truth.

Evidence A: The Rise of Therapy Speak

Trauma, gaslighting, boundaries and triggers are all terms thrown around with abandon - between friends, in the office, online. As more people experience therapy itself, the more its language has become mainstream. But radical self-care and the weaponisation of its associated vocabulary can have a dark side: little concern for the person on the other side of that ‘boundary’, misuse of terms that have serious meanings (see narcissism, OCD) and an unhelpful sense of self-righteousness… as Jonah Hill publicly discovered.

Evidence B: Hear My Story

In perhaps the app’s longest series yet, Reesa Teesa became a TikTok sensation for baring all about her marriage that was based on a web of lies. Making the most of the platform’s global reach and bitesize formats, ‘Who TF Did I Marry?!?” became a 50 part reality series broadcast in 10 minute chunks. Baring her truth for millions to hear, this story radically empowered Teesa, as well as giving a voice to others in similar situations.
